Thai Airways International (THAI) has confirmed that fleet expansion is a key part of its strategy, with the airline set to procure 45 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners as part of a major deal to increase its aircraft numbers and strengthen ties with the United States.

In a bold move aimed at both modernising its fleet and supporting Thailand’s trade negotiations with the US, THAI CEO Chai Eamsiri announced the airline’s plan to increase its fleet from 85 aircraft to 103 by 2026 and eventually to 116 by 2027.

The long-term goal is to expand to 150 aircraft by 2033, marking a significant leap in the airline’s capacity and global presence.

“The procurement of these aircraft is an important step not only for THAI’s growth but also to support the Thai government’s strategy of reducing the US trade deficit,” said Chai in an interview with Thansettakij.

“This agreement with Boeing was finalised at the Singapore Airshow in February last year, and it aligns with the government’s goal of increasing imports of US products, including aircraft, to help mitigate the impact of the US’s 36% reciprocal tariff on Thai goods.”

The deal with Boeing will see the delivery of 45 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners equipped with advanced GEnx engines. The first batch of these state-of-the-art aircraft is expected to arrive in mid-2027, with deliveries scheduled to continue for over 10 years. The airline has already made a deposit, confirming the deal is moving ahead.

In addition to the Boeing deal, THAI plans to acquire 35 more aircraft, with procurement strategies including leasing and hire-purchase arrangements, all aimed at maximising fleet management efficiency and supporting THAI’s financial position, reported The Nation.

Chai emphasised that these decisions will help the airline boost revenue and improve operational performance.

“The flexibility in aircraft procurement is key. We can select different types of aircraft depending on market demands, which will enhance operational efficiency and strengthen our competitiveness.”

This move positions THAI to better manage its fleet, routes, and operating costs, ensuring the airline remains adaptable and competitive in the ever-evolving aviation industry.

As the airline looks to the future, this fleet expansion could be the key to THAI’s success in the competitive global market.
