Best Pizza in Naples: 18 Pizzerias Not to Miss (1)

We can’t get enough pizza in Naples.

From neighborhood joints to some of the world’s most lauded pizzerias, we’ve eaten at a lot of Naples pizza restaurants and have loved every bite. This is a pizza city that keeps giving. In fact, our most recent 2024 visit revealed pizzerias that we couldn’t resist trying.

Not everybody shares our passion for Napoli. Some pass through the city without truly experiencing the rustic, provincial city. Perhaps they’re in for the day during a Mediterranean cruise or maybe they’re freaked out by the grunginess near Naples’ Central Train Station. But we keep returning to Napoli to admire this once greater and still great city that doubles as a world pizza capital.

Best Pizza in Naples: 18 Pizzerias Not to Miss (4)

Starting with flatbreads introduced by Greek conquerors millennia ago to the alleged invention of Margherita pizza in 1889 for Queen Margherita, Naples has enjoyed a long love affair with its most famous creation. Despite this storied history, or perhaps because of it, pizzaiolos in Naples know how to make some mighty fine pizzas. And they make a lot of them.

Naples Pizza Scene

Best Pizza in Naples: 18 Pizzerias Not to Miss (5)

The city’s pizza history is continuing to evolve. Not only did UNESCO recognize the art of Neapolitan ‘pizzaiuolo’ in 2017, but many Naples pizzerias are now adding gluten-free and vegan options to their menus. And, in a move that shot through the city like a lightning bolt, one pizzeria stalwart (Gina Sorbillo – see below) recently brought pineapple into the Naples pizza zeitgeist.

While there’s arguably no bad pizza in Naples, some pies are better than others. After five visits and eating more pizzas than we can count with all of our fingers and toes, we keep finding new gems. Depending on your itinerary in Italy’s pizza capital, you can eat at one or all of our favorite pizzerias. Most are in the city but three, while in Campania, justify a day trip.

The Naples pizza scene is stronger than it’s ever been. The competition among the city’s best pizzerias is fierce due to a cadre of pizzaiolos who have refined their craft over generations and have access to amazing ingredients.

Take a Secrets of Naples Pizza Tour if you have limited time and want a fun Naples pizza experience.

Best Pizza in Naples: 18 Pizzerias Not to Miss (6)

Since the 2010s, with the emergence of great modern pizzaiolos like Enzo Coccia, Franco Pepe (in nearby Caiazzo) and Ciro Salvo, this scene has experienced a convergence of back-to-basics artisan techniques and farm-to-table gastronomy that takes full advantage of what many believe to be the greatest agricultural region on earth.

Classic pizza joints like Di Matteo, Sorbillo and da Michele continue to hum along, making pies using rigid standards established over decades. However, there’s something else going on here. New guard pizzaiolos Isabella De Cham, Ciro Oliva and the Tutino brothers are transforming the scene into a singular, incomparable experience.

These are our picks for the pizzerias serving the best pizza in Naples:

10Pizzeria Diego Vitagliano – Contender For Best Pizzeria In The World

Best Pizza in Naples: 18 Pizzerias Not to Miss (7)

The pizzas at 10Pizzeria Diego Vitagliano are special. The contemporary pizzeria has catapulted to the top of this guide for good reason. Its Neapolitan pizza, crafted with high-hydration dough and locally sourced ingredients, has a crust that’s simultaneously supple and airy yet slightly crunchy on the edges.

Diego Vitigliano may not be a household name in America but things are different in Naples where pizzaiolas are revered just a level below football legend Diego Maradona. Not only does Vitigliano have three Naples pizzerias (plus one in Qatar), but he also topped the global ‘top 50 pizza” list in 2023 which is a big deal in Italy.

Read more about 10Pizzeria Diego Vitagliano.

Diego Vitagliano has multiple locations. We ate pizza at the flagship Bagnoli pizzeria located at Via Nuova Agnano, 1, 80125 Napoli NA, Italy.

50 Kalò – Artisan Pizzeria with Pizzazz

Best Pizza in Naples: 18 Pizzerias Not to Miss (8)

Ciro Salvo has been a leading force in defining modern pizza in Naples since he opened 50 Kalò in tony Megellina in 2014. Sure, there are many great pizza shops in Naples, but Salvo pioneered the new pizza movement by serving pies topped with the best locally sourced artisanal ingredients. He takes pride in crafting his dough with a special flour blend and a slow fermentation process. The result is great pizza that we love eating every time we pass through the city.

Salvo’s team executes Neapolitan pies with world-class symphonic precision. The crusts are beautifully caramelized, just on the edge of black, with a supple texture. When you eat at 50 Kalo, take note of the tiny dots of brown on the cheese. Every pizza that emerges from the pizza oven has this distinct caramelized look. Trust us, it’s a beautiful thing.

50 Kalò is located at Piazza Sannazaro, 201/c, 80121 Napoli NA, Italy.

Pizzeria Concettina ai Tre Santi – Innovative Pizzeria in a Classic Neighborhood

Best Pizza in Naples: 18 Pizzerias Not to Miss (9)

Ironically, one of Naples’ most innovative pizzerias has been operating in one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods since 1951. Decades later, fourth generation pizzaiolo Ciro Oliva runs Pizzeria Concettina ai Tre Santi with a fresh attitude and an innovative rethinking of pizza. He also isn’t afraid to top some of his pies with unique ingredients like crumbled taralli and even dehydrated sea algae.

Beyond pizza, Pizzeria Concettina ai Tre Santi’s menu standouts include a special frittatina genovese starter and a curated selection of beer and wine. The pizzeria offers a 7-course tasting experience for diners who make advance reservations and arrive with big budgets and even bigger appetites.

Whether or not you decide to splurge on a tasting menu, be sure to stroll around the pizzeria’s Rione Sanità neighborhood before or after your meal. You can get a taste of local market culture during the day or do a fun aperitivo experience at night.

Pizzeria Concettina ai Tre Santi is located at Via Arena della Sanità, 7 Bis, 80137 Napoli NA, Italy.

Pizzaria la Notizia – Pizzeria Helmed by a World-Famous Pizza Master

Best Pizza in Naples: 18 Pizzerias Not to Miss (10)

Enzo Coccia’s Pizzaria La Notizia, located way up the hill just past Vomero, wowed us during our first visit to Naples. We’re happy to report that the pizza mecca hasn’t lost it luster.

Coccia actively ‘holds court’ among guests who sit ‘cheek to jowl’ in Pizzaria La Notizia’s whimsically decorated dining room. The pizzas are amazing, featuring great Neapolitan pizza dough and some of the finest Campania ingredients like bright yellow piennolo tomatoes and strutto, a local lardo.

The team at Pizzaria La Notizia also makes show stopping calzones. We recommend ordering a dreamy pocket of goodness filled with sausage and ricotta in addition to a pizza.

Read more about Pizzeria La Notizia.

Pizzaria La Notizia has two pizzerias in Naples. We’ve eaten multiple times at the original pizzeria located at Via Michelangelo da Caravaggio, 53, 80126 Napoli, Italy.

Pizzeria da Attilio – Naples’ Stuffed-Crust Star

Best Pizza in Naples: 18 Pizzerias Not to Miss (11)

Pizzeria da Attilio is a must-visit for pizza fans who make the journey to the city where modern pizza was invented. Attilio Bachetti, a third generation pizzaiolo, runs his family’s pizzeria in a cozy space just off Via Toledo and mere steps from the street’s cavalcade of caffes and gelaterias.

Featured on David Chang’s Ugly Delicious and open since 1938, this pizzeria serves typical Margherita pies as well as uniquely shaped eight-crimped star pizzas. These star-shaped pies are no gimmick. Attilio’s pies are the real deal with each fluffy prong stuffed with luscious ricotta cheese. You’ll want to eat every morsel of the crust. The rest of the pie is equally worth eating.

Pizzeria da Attilio is located at Via Pignasecca, 17, 80134 Napoli, Italy.

Bro Ciro & Antonio Tutino – Edgy Pizza Near Piazza del Mercato

Best Pizza in Naples: 18 Pizzerias Not to Miss (12)

There aren’t just two ‘bros’ at Bro Ciro & Antonio Tutino. There are also two kinds of pizza – traditional and edgy – and they’re both worth eating.

The Margherita Del Monaco pizza we ate was fairly simple despite the addition of provolone del Monaco (produced locally in Campania, not the country of Monaco) to the Neapolitan classic. The same can’t be said about the edgy Our Mamma do Carmine pie topped with a melange of ingredients that included grilled artichoke, artichoke cream and oxidized artichoke powder. We’re not sure what the first Tutino generations would have thought about this level of gastronomy but the pie tasted great with a sensible combination of artichoke flavors and textures.

Ciro and Antonio Tutino are real life brothers with a pizza pedigree that spans five generations. Their grandfather, another Ciro, operates Pizzeria Tutino (see below) with his brother Giuseppe. Clearly, the art of making Neapolitan pizza is in the family’s gene pool. It’s also on full display at Bro Ciro & Antonio Tutino.

Open since 2019 and located adjacent to Piazza Mercato, Bro is a stylish two-story restaurant that attracts an equally stylish crowd of young professionals. That crowd fills both floors nightly while the restaurant’s wood-burning oven does its duty on the ground floor. The brothers man that oven (we met Ciro during our meal) and produce pizzas notable for their airy, crispy crusts and top notch ingredients.

This is a pizzeria we’ll be watching with interest.

Bro Ciro & Antonio Tutino is located at Piazza Mercato, 222b, 80142 Napoli NA, Italy.

Gino Sorbillo – Classic Pizza in Centro Storico

Best Pizza in Naples: 18 Pizzerias Not to Miss (15)

Follow the crowds on Via dei Tribunali to find Gino Sorbillo, arguably the most popular pizza joint in Naples. It’s not just tourists. Many native pizza traditionalists swear by Sorbillo since this is the pizza they grew up with.

We ate a solid margherita there made by ‘the book’. But we also swooned over a pie topped with tomato sauce and briny anchovies. Its seemingly simple, sweet, funky, salty flavor combo still sticks in our taste memory. We later ventured to Sorbillo’s seaside pizzeria for the opportunity to repeat the experience but with a view.

Best Pizza in Naples: 18 Pizzerias Not to Miss (16)

Gino Sorbillo (the man) has been busy expanding his pizza empire to include fried pizza and global franchising. In 2024, he added a pineapple pizza to his flagship menu, a move that generated international press and provoked heated local debate.

Gino Sorbillo has multiple Naples locations. We’ve eaten pizza at the flagship Centro Storico pizzeria located at Via dei Tribunali, 32, 80138 Napoli, Italy as well as at the seaside Gino Sorbillo Lievito Madre al Mare located at Via Partenope, 1, 80121 Napoli, Italy.

Starita – Pizzeria That Sofia Loren Made Famous

Best Pizza in Naples: 18 Pizzerias Not to Miss (17)

Located at the top of a steep hill in the Materdei neighborhood, Starita has been part of the city’s fabric since 1901. Made famous by the Vittorio De Sica film L’Oro di Napoli starring Sophia Loren, this multi-generation pizzeria serves a full pizza menu featuring a variety of pies plus a range of classic Neapolitan starters. Its signature pizza, the Montanara Starita, is a fried and baked beauty that’s topped with tangy tomato sauce, basil and two different cheeses.

During our meal, we shared two pies, including an excellent Marinara pie topped with the reddest Pomodoro tomatoes we’ve ever seen, plus some fried treats and craft beer. Needless to say, we walked back down the hill in an attempt to burn off a few calories.

Fun Fact
Beyond Naples, Starita has locations in Florence, Milan, Turin and Bangkok. Yes, Bangkok.

Starita is located at Via Materdei, 27/28, 80136 Napoli, Italy.

L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele – Monumentally Famous Pizzeria

Best Pizza in Naples: 18 Pizzerias Not to Miss (18)

L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele is perpetually crowded. Is it because the historic pizzeria was featured in the movie Eat, Pray, Love or is it because its value-priced pizzas are ginormous? It’s fair to guess that the answer to both is yes.

Da Michele’s pizzas aren’t just huge. They’re also round-ish and come in two basic options – classic Margherita with cheese, tomato sauce and a single basil leaf or two and cheeseless Marinara topped with traditional tomato sauce flavored with garlic and oregano.

Naples pizza prices are the best bargain in town and they’re especially low at L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele. Its monumental popularity has always drawn detractors but the pizzeria is such an institution that it would be unthinkable to not include it on a Naples pizza tour. Whether or not it’s your favorite, this is the pizza to which you’ll want to compare all other pies.

The original L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele is located at Via Cesare Sersale, 1, 80139 Napoli, Italy.

La Masardona – Fried Pizza Standard Bearer

Best Pizza in Naples: 18 Pizzerias Not to Miss (19)

La Masardona has specialized in fried pizza since 1945. Named after matriarch Anna Manfredi who earned the nickname La Masardona while delivering a letter to a neighbor, the historic pizzeria delivers archetypal fried pizza to a plate.

Focusing exclusively on pizza fritta, Enzo Piccirillo stays true to his family’s pizza traditions at La Masardona. With more than a dozen choices and ingredients like fresh ricotta, sautéed escarole, salami and octopus, the only challenge is deciding what to order.

And then there’s dessert. If you have space, you can order a chocolate-topped straccetti or a chocolate-filled battilocchio.

La Masardona is located at Via Giulio Cesare Capaccio, 27, 80142 Napoli, Italy.

Isabella de Cham – More Than Just Fried Pizza

Best Pizza in Naples: 18 Pizzerias Not to Miss (20)

IsabellaDe Cham is a woman who didn’t grow up with pizza making in her blood. But don’t judge De Cham’s self-named Rione Sanità pizzeria based on the pizzaiola’s gender and lineage. Her fried pizza is some of the best in Naples.

De Cham developed her Pizza Fritta specialty while working at La Masardona (see above) but her baked pizzas are great too. We enjoyed one of each – an ‘open’ Stracciata pizza fritte topped with prosciutto and bufala straciatella plus a traditional pie topped with sausage and friarielli.

Best Pizza in Naples: 18 Pizzerias Not to Miss (22)

You’ll want to pair your pizza with craft beer. Also, try to save room for De Cham’s Millefritta Pastiera, a unique take on the beloved Neapolitan dessert. Another option is to pop next door to Pasticceria Poppella and eat a Fiocca di Neve instead.

Isabella de Cham is located at Via Arena della Sanità, 27, 80137 Napoli NA, Italy.

Antica Pizzeria Di Matteo – Traditional Pizzeria in the Heart of the Action

Best Pizza in Naples: 18 Pizzerias Not to Miss (23)

Antica Pizzeria Di Matteo sells a tempting selection of fried treats that attracts a constant queue in front of its Centro Storico storefront. This is the spot where then President Bill Clinton ate fried ‘pizza pockets’ when he was in town for the 1994 G7 summit. While we’re curious if Clinton remembers eating that fried pizza, he’s certainly not forgotten in Napoli where his visit is revered like a modern day version of the Princess Margherita legend.

Neapolitan locals have been chowing down at Di Matteo since the multi-generational pizzeria opened in 1936. Arriving minutes after the pizzeria opened, we bypassed a swelling queue and secured a table before the upstairs dining room filled. Made with simple, local products including a generous soaking of olive oil, the Margherita pizza was a classic melange of Neapolitan ingredients and the Pizza Fritta Tradizionale, loaded with provola, ricotta, tomato, ham and salami, was a pleasurably rich, airy mouthful.

Antica Pizzeria Di Matteo is located at Via dei Tribunali, 94, 80138 Napoli NA, Italy.

Pizzeria Tutino – Pizza Pockets Near the Train Station

Best Pizza in Naples: 18 Pizzerias Not to Miss (24)

Crowds of locals queue for Pizza Tutino’s signature fried pizza pockets called portafoglio but don’t discount this pizzeria’s pizza. Located just a few blocks from Piazza Garibaldi and the Napoli Centrale train station, Pizzeria Tutino has been baking pies in wood-fired ovens since 1935.

Guests who ascend the pizzeria’s stairwell are rewarded with a range of classic, creative and fried pies. We tried two different pizzas – a classic Bufalina pie topped with tomatoes, mozzarella di bufala and fresh basil and a fried Ripieno al Forno pie stuffed with ricotta, mozzarella, prosciutto, salami, tomatoes and basil. After just a bite or two of the generous pies, we immediately remembered why Naples is our favorite pizza city.

Pizzeria Tutino is located at Via Cesare Carmignano, 79, 80142 Napoli, Italy.

Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba – Possibly the Oldest Pizzeria in the World

Best Pizza in Naples: 18 Pizzerias Not to Miss (25)

After eating lunch at the world’s oldest restaurant in Madrid, it made sense for us to eat pizzas at the world’s oldest pizzeria – Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba. With roots dating back to 1738, the pizzeria opened its current location in 1830. It’s now helmed by Gennaro Luciano, a noted pizzaiola who was working the oven during our meal. Needless to say, he was not the opening pizza chef.

Best Pizza in Naples: 18 Pizzerias Not to Miss (26)

Conveniently located mere steps from Piazza Dante, Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba’s menu has dozens of choices which turned our selection process into a challenge. The two pies we ordered were solid. Plus, as bonus, we can now say that we’ve eaten pizza at the oldest pizzeria in the world.

Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba is located at Via Port’Alba, 18, 80134 Napoli NA, Italy.

Pizzeria Brandi – Historic Pizzeria That Allegedly Invented Margherita Pizza

Best Pizza in Naples: 18 Pizzerias Not to Miss (27)

Eating a Margherita pizza at Pizzeria Brandi is a must since the upscale pizzeria may have invented the Margherita pizza recipe in the late 19th century. However, we have our doubts. According to one historical account, pizzas with tomatoes, cheese and basil had been in existence since the late 1700s. Either way, based on longevity alone, there’s no denying that Pizzeria Brandi is historic.

Best Pizza in Naples: 18 Pizzerias Not to Miss (28)

What did we think of the pizza at this historic Naples pizzeria? Truth be told, Brandi didn’t make our favorite pies. Plus, they cost twice the price of pizzas at Da Michele and Gino Sorbillo. That being said, the pizza at Pizzeria Brandi is likely better than any pizza you’ll eat in your hometown, assuming you weren’t born in Naples.

Pizzeria Brandi is located at Salita Sant’Anna di Palazzo, 1/2, 80132 Napoli, Italy.

Bonus – Neighborhood Pizzerias

With so many neighborhood pizzerias in Naples, you’re never far away from your next pizza. It’s cheap. It’s tasty. And, sometimes, it’s what’s for dinner.

Neighborhood pizza shops are located all over Napoli. Just walk until you bump into one or you find them during a pizza tour like we did.

Travelers typically take day trips from Naples to Caserta for two primary reasons – visiting the epic Royal Palace of Caserta and eating pizza at globally famous I Masanielli di Francesco Martucci – thrice annointed best pizzeria in the world by the people behind the ‘top 50 pizza” lists. We say plan ahead and do both in the same day!

The train ride between Naples and Caserta is both fast (around 40 minutes) and inexpensive (under 10 euros). However, for pizza pioneers who plan ahead and score advance reservations, the experience is priceless.

Pizzeria Giagiu’ in Salerno (35 Miles from Naples)

Best Pizza in Naples: 18 Pizzerias Not to Miss (33)

Located at the tip of the Amalfi Coast, Salerno is a simple detour or home base for anybody traveling from Naples to Positano or Ravello. However, pizza pioneers can spend the day visiting this Campania city that influenced generations of pizza makers in American cities like New Haven and NYC.

Salerno’s pizza is similar to Neapolitan pizza with a couple key differences. First, traditional Salerno-style pizza has a crispier crust. And, second, Salerno pizzerias like the excellent Pizzeria Giagiu’ have direct access to some of the region’s finest anchovies. Whether or not you order a pie toppped with the salty fish is optional but recommended.

Pizzeria Giagiu’ is located at Lungomare Trieste, 218/220, 84122 Salerno SA, Italy.
